Piercing FAQs

Is piercing painful?

Many patients describe the discomfort as a brief poke comparable to a finger stick.

What type of piercing jewelry is used?

We use genuine Blomdahl medical-grade piercing studs that are 100% nickel free,  selected to minimize skin sensitivity and reduce the incidence of new onset nickel allergy in the future while supporting healthy healing.

The thoughtfully designed piercing stud post's width, length, and cushioned backing allow for airflow, reduce moisture from getting trapped between the tissue and stud, minimize aggravating pressure on the tissue during healing, and facilitate a comfortable transition to starter jewelry that eventually replace the stud.

What are the common risks?

As with any procedure that breaks the skin, there is a small risk of:

  • Infection

  • Bleeding

  • Swelling

  • Allergic reaction

  • Scarring or keloid formation

  • Asymmetry or migration of the piercing into the tissue during healing, which is rare due to the smart design of the Blomdahl studs.

Our sterile technique, medical-grade materials, and detailed aftercare instructions help minimize these risks, though they cannot be eliminated entirely.

What are the general aftercare expectations?

Proper aftercare is one of the most important factors in successful healing.

We recommend that you:

  • Wash your hands before touching your piercing jewelry.

  • Clean the skin around the piercing as instructed twice daily using the recommended cleansing method. Avoid unnecessary twisting or rotating of the earrings.

  • Remember that commonly, there may be slight redness, mild tenderness, or mild warmth in the piercing area during the first few days, which should gradually improve.

  • Leave the piercing jewelry in place for the recommended healing period before changing to other jewelry.

  • Avoid swimming in unchlorinated water until initial healing is complete, at least 2 weeks post-procedure.

  • Contact your own healthcare provider within 24 hours if you notice increasing redness, swelling, drainage of pus, severe pain, or other concerns.

  • In the case that a piercing jewelry needs to be removed due to worsening infection, oral antibiotics may be appropriate. The area can then be re-pierced after 6-12 months if desired.

At what age can my child get their ears pierced?

The earliest age we will pierce is a 4 months old, after the earlobe has had time to further develop.

How do you decide on piercing placement?

Each placement is pre-marked in a visually desired location with healthy full tissue, approved or marked by the patient or accompanying adult prior to piercing.

If both ears are being pierced, how does timing work?

If desired, both ears can often be pierced at the same moment. This is done by using two piercing instruments simultaneously.

Do you offer nose or cartilage ear piercing?

At this time, we only offer lower ear piercing (earlobe). We do plan on offering nose and outer ear cartilage piercing in the future.

When should I switch from the piercing stud to the appropriate jewelry and what kind should I use?

  • Most piercings heal sufficiently for jewelry changes after approximately 6 for earlobes and 12 weeks for cartilage, although complete healing continues beyond that for up to 1 year.

  • It is recommended to switch from a piercing stud no later than 3 months after the piercing for an earlobe and 6 months for cartilage to allow the ear hole to continue healing and adaptation to the standard jewelry post size.

  • It is recommended to choose hypoallergenic options, such as medical grade titanium, medical grade plastic, or gold to maximize protection against developing a nickel allergy.

  • Avoid switching into heavy or hanging earrings for at least 6 months after piercing so as to minimize pulling that could stretch the hole.

  • For the first year, jewelry should be worn 24/7 in a new piercing to keep the hole open and stable.

Why not use a traditional piercing gun?

Traditional reusable piercing guns cannot be fully sterilized and may cause additional tissue trauma. The Blomdahl Medical Piercing System uses sterile, single-use cartridges designed for professional healthcare environments.

What if the piercing will be next to an existing piercing?

If your new piercing will be near an already existing piercing, we will plan the second placement where it is not too close and best for tissue healing. You will be asked to remove your existing piercing and leave it out for at least 24 hours after the procedure.

Is this service covered by insurance?

No. Piercing is considered an elective cosmetic procedure and is not billed to insurance.

Can non-members of your practice schedule ear piercing?

Yes. We welcome both Mountains Meet Medical members and members of the community.
