For Kid's Sake: Why Accurate Dosing Matters

Administering the correct dose of medication is crucial for safety and effectiveness. Too little may not work well enough, and too much can be harmful.
Have you ever found yourself wondering if the acetaminophen (Tylenol) or the ibuprofen (Motrin) you gave to your child is working at all?
It can be especially challenging to determine what that correct dose is for children because they may not be able to tell you clearly if the dose given is effective.
Maybe the fever isn’t dropping, or their discomfort isn’t improving as much as expected.
It could be that the dose given wasn’t quite enough to be fully therapeutic!
But you followed the directions and dosing chart on the bottle!
Yes! The dosing charts on medication packaging get you in the general range, but they are based on weight categories—not your child's exact weight.
For example, let’s look at infant ibuprofen dosing:
The bottle suggests 1.25 mL for a child between 12-17 lbs.
According to specific weight-based dosing (more detail on this later):
If your child is 12 lbs, their safe dosage range is 0.68–1.36 mL per dose.
If your child is 17 lbs, their safe dosage range is 0.964–1.93 mL per dose.
💡 That means 1.25 mL could be perfectly adequate—or it could be too low for achieving enough relief, even for the lighter child in that weight category!
This doesn't mean you should always give the higher dose, but understanding how weight-based dosing works allows you to confidently discuss your child's needs with their pediatrician.
How to Dose Liquid Ibuprofen (Motrin) for Children
✔ Designed for children 6 months – 11 years old
✔ Give with food to prevent stomach irritation
✔ Dosing range: 5-10 mg per kg per dose, every 6-8 hours

⚠️ Important: Liquid ibuprofen comes in two different strengths (concentrations)!
Infant Ibuprofen: 50 mg per 1.25 mL
Children's Ibuprofen: 100 mg per 5 mL
💡 Always check the bottle concentration before calculating and dosing!
How to Dose Liquid Acetaminophen (Tylenol) for Children
✔ Designed for newborns – 11 years old
✔ Dosing range: 10-15 mg per kg per dose, every 4-6 hours
✔ Maximum:
Newborns (first 4 weeks): 60 mg/kg per day

Make Liquid Dosing Easier: Use a Weight-Based Calculator
💡 To ensure the most precise dose for your child, use a weight-based calculator that factors in:
✅ Your child's exact weight
✅ The correct medication
✅ The correct concentration
Final Thoughts
✔ Always consult your child’s pediatrician before giving medication.
✔ Use the lowest effective dose to manage symptoms.
✔ Measure with an oral syringe or measured dosing cup, never a kitchen spoon!
✔ Check for the correct medication concentration before giving a dose.
⚠️ Important: While over-the-counter medications can provide relief, they aren’t always the solution. Depending on your child’s symptoms, duration of illness, medical history, and response to medication, further medical evaluation may be needed.
⚠️ Important: If your baby is under 3 months old and has a fever, do NOT give a medication for fever without consulting their Pediatrician first! Fevers in newborns can be a sign of serious illness requiring urgent evaluation.
When in doubt, check with your pediatrician!
